The number of English speaking people in the world has grown rapidly over the past 100 years and now is arguably the most widely spoken and understood language in the world. Recently the English language has celebrated the birth of a new official word; the millionth English word no less.
So, what’s the word?
Answer: Web 2.0
Web 2.0 beat off competition from “Noob” those who love gaming know I’m talking about, and “Slum Dog” which refers to those people living in the slums of India. Both these words came in at a reputable 999,998 and 999,999th respectively.
So, Web 2.0? I am actually surprised this word was the millionth word because from my experience, I heard and was using the word “Web 2.0″ way before the Oscars of 2008.
Web 2.0 is a word that describes the huge and life changing phenomena of the development of the web from a static, one way experience to a social and communication beast that allows any number of people to interact and share information with anyone who has a connection. What a change!
Web 2.0 deserves a winner’s medal but in truth it should have been a word a few years ago
