Showing Kindness to the Poor

Showing kindness and mercy to the poor and needy in society is another way a person can increase his sustenance and wealth. This is because Allah’s blessings shower upon a society due to its poor and helpless people among them.

The Prophet SAW said: “ Find me amongst your weak, because the only reason that you are provided sustenance and aided in victory is because of your weak!” Reported by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (5/198).

Mulla ‘Ali Qari said:
“Find me amongst the weak’ means to search for the prophets pleasure by being kind and merciful to your poor’” Mirqat al-Mafatih (9/84)

The primary reason that Allah provides for us is due to the presence of the weak and poor so by being kind to them Allah will bestow a wealth to us.

Therefore those who wish to achieve the help of Allah should be kind to the weak and down-trodden in society even if it’s with a smile. For those of us that can’t show our kindness or mercy financially can show it in compassion and love by not looking down upon them with arrogance for verily its not status and wealth that make us better than one another but only the Taqwa of Allah.

Being Honest in One’s Dealings

Another way to increase your wealth is by being honest and truthful in your dealings and transactions with other people. When a person is God fearing and strives to be honest and fair in his transactions when earning his wealth Allah will bless him in his transactions and cause them to be successful and fruitful. On the other hand, when a person is not God fearing, dishonest and doesn’t care about obeying Allah when earning his wealth, Allah then removes all His blessings from his transactions and the person ends up losing in this world and the Hereafter.

The Prophet (SAW) said “The two parties of a transaction have the right to annul the contract as long as they do not separate from each other. So if they were truthful to one another, and honest in explaining the defects of an item, then they will be blessed in their transaction, but if they lied and hid the defects of an item, then the blessings of their transaction are destroyed!” Reported by Muslim (#3836)

So if both parties were deceitful there is no doubt the blessings in the transaction is destroyed, however what if one was deceitful and the other truthful?

Al-Hafiz ibn Hajr said in response to this:
” It is possible that the hadith is taken on it’s apparent meaning, and that the evil effects of lying fall upon the transaction even though one of  them was truthful, so both will be rewarded upon their deed, one will be rewarded for being truthful and the one that lied will get the sin. It is also possible that this hadith is specific to the one that cheated and not the one who was honest, and this opinion was the one that Ibn Abi Jamrah agreed with.” Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi,(4/375).

So it is important to be honest when dealing with one another in business transactions because this is the source of blessings. It is the honesty and sincerity in ones dealings with each other that insures Allah’s help for them, their partners and their business altogether guaranteeing a profit for them.

Marriage

Another one of the ways in which a person is promised an increase in wealth is through marriage.

This will no doubt come as a surprise to many, perhaps because of the fact that ones limited financial situation is (in our times) on of the main reasons that prevent a person from marrying! Yet, the irony of the fact is that marriage is one of the easiest ways in which a person can guarantee an increase in his sustenance from Allah.

Allah states:

“And marry those among you who are single, and also marry the pious of your maids and maid-servants (male and female slaves). If  they be poor, Allah will enrich them out of His Bounty. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures needs, All-Knowing.”
Surah al-Nur,32

Al-Qurtubi writes, commenting on this verse “This means: let not the poverty of a man or woman be a reason for not getting married. For in this verse Allah promises those who get married for the sake of acquiring Allah’s pleasure and seeking refuge from disobeying Him that Allah will enrich him…” Tafsir al-Qurtubi, v.12 p.220

We also find the companions of the prophet would encourage others to marry. Abu Bakr is reported to have said “Obey Allah in what He has commanded you to do by getting married; He will then fulfil His promise to you and make you rich” al-Durr al-Manthur,v.5 pps.80-81.

Emigrating (hijrah) for the sake of Allah

Emigrating for the sake of Allah is yet another way that one can increase his sustenance. This is known as making ‘Hijrah’ in Arabic, and it entails leaving a land that a person cannot properly worship Allah to a land where it will be easier to worship Allah. It means to leave a land of disbelievers or evil people, to the lands of the Muslims. It is essential for such an emigration to be sincerely for the sake of Allah and not for the sake of some worldly gain or benefit such as marriage or wealth.

The proof that emigration for the sake of Allah can increase our wealth is found in this statement of Allah:

“He who emigrates from his home in the cause of Allah, will find on earth many dwelling places (muraghama) and plenty to live by (sa’ah). And whosoever leaves his home as an emigrant unto Allah and His Messenger, and death overtakes him, then his reward is surely incumbent upon Allah. And Allah is ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
Surah al-Nisa,100.

In this verse, Allah has promised whoever emigrates for His sake two benefits and blessings, ‘Muraghama’ a comprehensive word that implies all of the good of the religion, and ‘Sa’ah’ which includes all of the good of the world, wealth of course being one of them.

Spending in the way of Allah

Spending in the way of our Creator is another way to increase our wealth. Muslims do this in three primary ways, two of which are obligatory with certain conditions and the other is voluntary.

The two obligatory are zakat, this is given yearly for certain types of livestock, agricultural produce, money and business items) and zakat al-fitr. This is to give to the poor and needy at the end of Ramadan as an expiation for any sins committed while fasting.

The third type of charity is voluntary and is known as sadaqah, this is encouraged at all times and places. All these three types of charities are seen as ‘Spending in the way of Allah’ and these charities can vary from giving money to the poor, helping to build a masjid to supporting the welfare of orphans, widows or students of knowledge. The point is that one should spend of his wealth on causes that are pleasing to Allah (SWT).

One of the proofs that spending in the way of Allah is a direct cause of being blessed with more wealth is in this verse of the Quran that follows:

Allah says in the Quran: “Say: Truly, my Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills of His slaves, and also restricts it for him, and whatever you spend of anything (in Allahs cause), He will replace it. And He is the best of providers.”
Surah Saba’ 39

Ibn Kathir commented on this verse saying that this meant that “No matter how much you spend on matters that He has made obligatory upon you and on matters that are permissible, Allah will replace it for you in this world with a substitute (meaning more wealth) and in the Hereafter with rewards, as has been explained in the sunnah.”
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (3/595).

Therefore, this verse shows that whoever spends in the way of Allah has qualified to be of those whose money will be substituted for other money in this world and those who do not spend in the way of Allah have not qualified for this blessing, hence their money will surly continually decrease.

Frequently Performing Hajj & Umrah

One of the greatest blessings of Allah and the easiest ways to increase your wealth is the frequent performing of Hajj and Umrah. When a person takes the time and effort to travel to Makkah, and spends of his wealth for the pleasure of Allah, then Allah rewards him by increasing his rizq.

One of the many proofs that performing Hajj and Umrah frequently increases your wealth is in this hadith reported by ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud where he said that he heard the prophet say:

“Follow up between Hajj and Umrah (i.e. continually repeat the performance) because they both eliminate poverty and sins just like a furnace eliminates the dirty impurities of iron, gold and silver. And an accepted Hajj has no reward less than paradise!”
Reported by al-Tirmidhi in his Sunan.

In this beautiful Hadith, the Prophet (SAW) encouraged the muslims to follow up one Hajj after another, and one Umrah after another, for the rewards of this small deed are great. Not only will a person increase his rizq, he will also have his sins removed, just as a burning furnace refines iron, gold and silver from impurities!

Thanking Allah

Continual thanking of Allah for the present blessings bestowed upon us by Him is yet another guaranteed way to increase our wealth. When we appreciate and are content and grateful for the blessing we already have, Allah then increases these blessings, inshallah.

The proof that thanking Allah increases ones rizq/sustenance are many and one of which is in Surah Ibrahim where Allah tells us:

“And remember when your Lord proclaimed: If you are thankful, I will give you more (of my blessings), but if you are thankless, then verily, My punishment is indeed severe.”
Surah Ibrahim, 7

This is a clear, explicit verse in which Allah promises an increase in blessings if His servants are thankful to Him. This is one of the reasons that we find that the Prophet (saaws) would continually thank Allah, for it is only befitting that the One who provides all that we have be thanked.

So a true believer must give thanks to Allah by praising Him, attributing all his blessings to Him and worshiping Him for all the good that he has been blessed with for Allah to then increase him in these goods.

Establishing the Ties of Kinship

Another proven method to increase your wealth is to establish the ties of kinship.

Our family are our ‘Kinship’, all our close relatives from both mother’s and father’s side are considered to be ‘kin’. The establishment of the ties of kinship means showing these relatives kindness, compassion and mercy. It necessitates keeping in touch with them, paying them visits & inquiring about their health and welfare and it obligates helping them out in whatever way possible.

One of the many proofs that establishing the ties of kinship increases your wealth is in this beautiful hadith reported by Ali ibn Abi Talib that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

“Whoever is pleased to have his life extended, his rizq increased and an evil death be averted from him, then let him have taqwa of Allah, and let him fulfil the ties of kinship!”
Reported by Ahmad in his Musnad.

And who is there that does not wish to have his wealth increased, an evil death averted from his path and his life extended? Here the Prophet (SAW) has informed us that whoever possesses two characteristics will be able to obtain all of these blessings. These 2 characteristics are simple and easy, but only for those who sincerely desire the rewards of Allah, these characteristics are Taqwa of Allah and fulfilling the ties of kinship.

Putting ones trust in Allah – Tawakkul

Another factor that causes your wealth to increase is when you put your trust in Allah. This is when a believer accepts the will if Allah without anger or questioning,  realizing that nothing occurs except with Allah’s will and whatever occurs, occurs because of divine wisdom. The true believer realizes that Allah (SWT) has indeed decided and knows what is best and has full faith in whatever Allah decrees for him.

(This doesn’t mean that we should just sit back and rely on Allah’s fate for us and not make any effort of our own to achieve our goals)

When a believer desires an object he should strive by all allowable/halal means to obtain it but he should fully realize at the same time that success, or otherwise, is up to the will of Allah.

It was reported by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih that a bedouin came to the Prophet (SAW) and asked,

“Should I tie my camel up (to prevent it from running away) or shall I put my trust in Allah?”

The Prophet (SAW) then informed him of the true nature of tawakkul and replied,

“Tie it up, then put your trust in Allah!”

This hadith is clear proof that true tawakkul is a matter of the heart and doesn’t discourage permissible bodily action needed to attain it.

One of the many proofs that tawakkul is one of the means to increase your wealth is this famous hadith reported by al-Tarmidthi in his sunan.

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that the Prophet (SAW) said, “If you were to put your trust in Allah the way that Allah deserves, then you would be provided for as the birds are; they leave in search of food at the beginning of the day hungry, and they return at the end of the day full.”

This beautiful hadith speaks for it self, the Prophet (SAW) described this bird as one who leaves in the early morning in search for food. It does not remain in its nest believing that food will come to it, but rather strives to achieve its desired goal. The true believer who puts his trust in Allah and strives to attain his rizq (sustenance) is reminded that they will likewise be rewarded, such a believer will taste the fruits of his trust.

Constantly Worshipping Allah

This is another way that people can be blessed by Allah in their worldly affairs but let it not be assumed that the meaning of this phrase is to abandon all worldly efforts such as ones duty to their family and business. What is meant here is that we should always be conscious of our worship. The true believer does not let family or business come in the way of his worship, during the acts of worship we should be humble and attentive, realizing the greatness of our Lord, our minds should not wander to other thoughts and worldly affairs.

In part of the hadith of Jibril reported by muslim the Prophet (SAW) said:

“..worship Allah as though you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, of a surety He sees you.”

So we should be kind to family, honest to customers and conscious that all deeds are being monitored by Allah (SWT).

One of the proofs that constant worship increases wealth is in this hadith Qudsi reported by al-Tirmidhi and others where Abu Hurayrah stated that the Prophet (saaws) said:

“Allah says, O son of Adam! Take time out to constantly worship me, I will fill your chest with richness and remove your poverty. And if you do not do so, I will make your hands filled with occupation, and will not remove your poverty.”

Here Allah informs us that those who worship Him constantly will be rewarded by having their hearts filled with richness and their poverty covered up. This indicates such people will not be dependant on others to supply their needs; rather Allah will cover up their condition and supply them with rizq/wealth without having to go to other people to obtain it.

On the other hand , if a person does not take the time out to worship Allah, Allah will punish him by making him very busy with work etc yet despite all his hard work, because his hard work is deprived of Allahs blessings, he will not be successful and still be reliant on others.
